reports that the u.s. ambassador to libya has been killed. reuters is reporting that ambassador chris stevens and three other embassy employees died in a rocket attack yesterday in benghazi, libya. the government isn't saying much about the attack, but secretary of state hillary clinton did announce late last night that a state department officer had been killed in libya. there have been violent protests in libya over a film an american made that was critical of the prophet muhammad. that film also sparked these demonstrations in egypt. this is the u.s. embassy in cairo where demonstrators scaled walls and tore down an american flag. most of the embassy staff had already left the compound. we aren't hearing of any deaths or serious injuries at that protest. we will monitor the situation in libya and bring you any updates that we receive. first, good morning to you. i'm eun yang. >> and good morning. i'm aaron gilchrist. right now it is 6:00 a.m. the sun is soon to rise on another beautiful day around the washington region. a live look outside. temperatures 62 degrees here in upper northwest d.c.

traffic. 6:02 now. breaking news. the death toll from two factory fires in pakistan is on the rise. more than 190 people are now confirmed dead. the largest fire is at a garment factory in karachi, where crews are still trying to put out the flames. firefighters say many of the 166 died were trapped in a basement. 25 others are dead in a shoe factory in lahore. a man is in the hospital after being stabbed several times in northeast d.c. this happened around 3:30 this morning on lincoln road. the victim's name has not been released at this point. so far no arrests. also new this morning, police are looking for the person responsible for shooting a 16-year-old boy in the district. the shooting happened just after 1:00 this morning near 37th street and riggs road in southeast d.c. the victim was shot in the stomach. he was taken to howard university hospital in serious but stable condition. no word on a motive or a suspect

description. this morning a mother wants answers in her son's murder. he was shot while he walked to school in prince george's county. police say someone shot marckel ross yesterday morning on old central avenue in capitol heights as he walked to central high school. he was a junior. his mother tells news 4 a group of boys bullied her son last year. she says the bullying was so intense she took her complaints all the way to the board of education. the ross family moved from anne arundel county to district heights in 2009. >> i moved out of anne arundel county for a better life. i felt they were old enough to protect themselves a little bit. so i brought them back up here. >> elizabeth ross said her son made good grades last year, making the honor roll every quarter. prince george's county police is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. the federal reserve is about to take a new step trying to invigorate the u.s. economy. this comes after a record day on wall street.

the dow closed at a five-year high and end the day at 13,323. expectations on a federal reserve two-day meeting gave bank stocks a boost. investors think the fed will keep short-term interest rates low for at least two more years. major credit rating agency moody's is warning it may downgrade the u.s. credit rating if the government fails to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff at the end of the year. that's the year end expiration of bush era tax cuts plus tax cuts that will automatically take place as part of a deal to raise the debt ceiling. the government may have to pay higher interest rates on some of its $16 trillion debt. the white house denying reports that the president snubbed the israeli prime minister's request for a meeting. an israeli newspaper reported that president obama denied a meeting with benjamin netanyahu later this month during a u.n. general assembly. but a white house spokesman said

we want to update you on our top story. breaking news in libya. several media outlets are reporting the u.s. ambassador to libya is among four killed in an outbreak of american violence. al jazeera is reporting that ambassador chris stevens died from smoke inhalation during an attack on the consulate. three other embassy employees are also dead. the violent protests in libya are in response to a film made by an american man that was critical of the prophet muhammad. a whistleblower is getting a big payoff for helping the internal revenue service. a former swas banker given $100 million for helping bring in tax cheats. bradley brinkenfeld told what went on inside the ubs's banking division. it came at a personal cost. he served two years in prison for helping american clients hide their money overseas. he was released last month. >> largest tax fraud in the world, and i sacrificed my reputation, my life, my finances, and this is how i get treated.

earlier yesterday in miami-dade county. the day thousands of tech fans have been waiting for is finally here. today apple will unveil its new iphone 5. experts say it could be in stores within weeks. nbc's jay gray is live in san francisco awaiting the big announcement. jay, what are we talking about here? how good could this be? >> reporter: that's what everybody wants to know, eun. if you listen to the rumors and speculation, it's going to be pretty good. it's supposed to be sleeker, slimmer, faster, do more. it will be amazing to see. what will also be amazing is to see how the hype and furor continues after the release. we have been waiting and watching for months. there have been websites totally devoted to rumors about the iphone 5. today it looks like all those rumors will give way to reality when it's presented here in san francisco. you talked about when people can get it, and that's one of the biggest questions surrounding the phone right now.

we'll find out for sure in a few hours here. it looks like, early indications are, we could see the 5 shelves by september 21st. they think, when that happens, that initially we'll see early sales of 5,000 to 6,000 of the units. they believe 10,000 to 12,000 by the end of september. that is quite a pair of shoes to fill for this new phone as far as consumers are concerned. we do know in anticipation of the release of the iphone 5, the used phone market has been flooded with iphone 4's and 4s's, people preparing to upgrade. 6:19 now. the obama administration approved the first group of applications to the deferred action for childhood arrivals program months ahead of schedule. the department of homeland security allowing the small group of immigrants to get work permits and avoid deportation for up to two years. that program is for undocumented

immigrants who came to the u.s. before the age of 16. to qualify, you have to be under 30 years old and have lived in the u.s. for at least five years. the agency so far received 72,000 applications. it is day three of a teachers strike in chicago. so far there is no contract deal in sight. the teachers union and the school board cannot agree on a new teacher evaluation system and a process to decide which laid off teachers can be rehired. union leaders say they will meet this morning to review the school board's new comprehensive proposal. bad news for caps fans. it's looking more and more likely the nhl season will not start on time because of yet another lockout. about 250 players will meet today and tomorrow in new york to discuss a pending work stoppage. the nhl's board of governors is also meeting tomorrow. both sides appear far apart on a new collective bargaining agreement. we could be facing a lockout with no deal is reached by midnight saturday.

has been found dead. 62-year-old gary cook was found by a maintenance worker inside his culpeper apartment yesterday. sources tell news 4 cook may have been dead for several days. his wife patricia was killed by a culpeper town police officer in february. that officer has since been fired and now faces murder charges. cook had also filed a multimillion dollar wrongful death suit. state police say there are no signs of foul flay in cook's death. new this morning, montgomery county police rescue several animals after an al elderly woman was found dead. she was found just after midnight inside her corsica home in bethesda. the woman died of natural causes. the police also found ten small dogs in that home. three did not survive. the other seven were taken to an emergency vet for care. they'll be available for adoption as soon as they're healthy enough. this morning police crewsers are off the streets in

montgomery county because the crown victorias are being inspected for a steering problem. crown victorias maybe up one-third of the county's fleet. inspectors have already cleared one-third of those cars, and they expect to complete inspections by saturday. thered could be more fallout from former d.c. councilman kwame brown's case. that means that brown has agreed to cooperate in this and other critical matters. it's not clear what those other criminal matters are or who they're pertaining to. brown is awaiting sentencing on a bank fraud charge. he's scheduled to be sentenced in november. d.c. councilman michael brown will have a bit of a kiss advantage heading into november's election. the at large member said someone stole $100,000 from his campaign fund. brown said he found out about the theft in june and fired his campaign treasurer. he hasn't said who the accused thief is but says he's trusted that person for years. >> the person who embezzled from the campaign was someone who had

been working with me for more than half a decade. it's sma not i had extreme confidence in as well as many members not just in the district of columbia but this region, who he had worked for. it's apparently costing you more and more to get health insurance through your job. a new study finds that the cost of job-based health insurance is increasing faster than employee wages. researchers say the average annual premiums for family coverage jumped 4% this year. individual premiums up about 3%. on average, salaries only went up 2%. this is the 13th straight year insurance costs have increased faster than earnings. in news 4 your health, the popular supplement called fish oil may not have significant benefit when it comes to heart health. fish oil does neither harm nor good. it also shows that people taking fish oil supplements suffered 9%

fewer heart deaths and 11% fewer heart attacks. the study found no significant difference for other factors, including sudden death, total death, and strokes. >> i recommend to patients they take fish as a first line measure. if they don't like fish or they want to really be sure they're getting omega-3's, there's no harm to taking fish oil and certainly might help. >> the supplements are a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to be good for the heart. aa local college professor stirring up a debate. what she did during class that one student said caused shock and awe. plus you may have noticed the paint job. why drivers on one local road are seeing red. apple could take the wraps off a much rumored mini-ipad. most analysts believe the company will wait until next month to do that. facebook co-founder mark zuckerberg did speak in his first major public appearance since the company's rocky debut in may. zuckerberg admits he's disappointed with facebook's stock price, which has lost nearly half of its value. but he urges investors to be patient. he sees a lot of opportunity for facebook to capitalize on the growing mobile market. >> we're going to do the things that we think are going to build value over the long term. over the next three to five years, i think the biggest question that is on everyone's minds that will determine, at least our performance over that period, is really going to be how well we do with mobile. >> zuckerberg says facebook is not developing its own smart phone, but the company is working on a search product to

vdot says the color is designed to draw attention to the lanes, which you can only use during certain hours. a sign above with a green arrow or red "x" indicates when you can and can't use those lanes. vdot says it hopes that painting the lanes will make the rules more clear. campus controversy at american university. an assistant professor is under fire after breast-feeding her baby during class. the incident happened during the first day of sex, gender, culture class. professor adrienne pine brought her infant drawer to class and breast fed without covering up in front of 40 students. after the incident, the school newspaper contacted professor pine. she said online she couldn't take her daughter to daycare because she was sick and canceling class did not seem like an option. students are speaking out on both sides of the debate. >> i felt rather uncomfortable in that class, and i don't go to classrooms to feel uncomfortable. >> i think women should be allowed to breast-feed in public. it's not something unnatural and
